Respecting Mecca
Sometimes missing the simplest of details can result in great insult. It didn’t take long for engineers to learn that western-styled sit-down toilets and urinals are not preferred by most Afghans. They’d rather have the type that are low to the ground and designed for squatting. But more importantly, if they are installed, they should never face nor have their backs turned to Mecca . It is considered disrespectful as Mecca is the holiest of Muslim cities. Muhammad, who is said to be the messenger of Islam, was born in Mecca and it is toward this religious center or house of God that Muslims turn five times daily in prayer.
